Dr Simon Toms

MSc, BDS (Adel), MOrth RCS (Edin)

Simon grew up in Adelaide and spent most of his youth in the south of Adelaide swimming, sailing and playing football. He gained his dental qualifications from the University of Adelaide in 2012. Seeking a sea-change, Simon then moved to Shepparton, in rural Victoria, where he worked for several years as a private dentist in a bustling surgery, as well as teaching undergraduate dentists from the University of Melbourne.

Simon returned to work at Orthodontic Smile Practice in 2015, predominantly in a business and marketing advisory role whilst he began his specialist training at King’s College London in the United Kingdom! He completed his 3-year postgraduate training and was admitted to the Royal College of Dental Surgeons in Edinburgh in 2018. Upon return home to Adelaide in 2019, Simon was accepted as an Australian-Accredited Specialist Orthodontist with AHPRA.

Simon embraces technology and uses the latest in evidence-based treatment and techniques. Simon has experience working with all ages and his compassionate and patient approach to his work makes him an ideal choice for those with dental anxiety or those who may have social or communicative difficulties.

He works at our surgeries in North Adelaide, Marion, Modbury, Broken Hill and Roxby Downs! He also is an orthodontic clinical lecturer for the University of Adelaide at the Adelaide Dental Hospital.

Outside of orthodontics has a great love of football, cricket, winemaking, travel and spending weekends with his wife and two Labradoodles – Scout and Willow!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do braces hurt?

Short answer: No. Getting braces on is entirely painless, however, you may experience mild discomfort in the 1-2 days following the initial placement of braces or after a major wire change. This discomfort may be managed with regular pain relief as you would for a headache.

How much does it cost?

The cost of braces is dependent on different factors including treatment severity, type of brace used and whether it includes one or both arches and which appliance is used. Your orthodontist will provide detailed quotations at your discussion visit.

Who can have braces?

There is no age limit for wearing braces. We have some of our most successful and rewarding treatment outcomes with adult patients. The traditional age for braces are in early teens, which is primarily due to the bone growth occurring at this age.
